Macka B, born Christopher MacFarlane in Wolverhampton, UK, to Jamaican parents, has become a towering figure in reggae music and conscious lyrics. From a young age, he was captivated by the vibrant reggae beats emanating from the blues parties next door. At school, Macka B honed his musical talents by playing the violin and singing in the choir. While pursuing a career in engineering after school, a factory closure shifted his path toward music—a blessing in disguise.
Inspired by reggae legends such as Burning Spear, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh, Macka B began DJing at home, drawing influence from iconic toasters like U-Roy, I-Roy, and Prince Far-I. He embraced the Ras Tafari faith, which has remained central to his life and music.
In 1982, a visit to Jamaica profoundly inspired Macka B, enhancing his DJ skills. The following year, he won a DJ competition at the Rising Star club in Bilston, marking the start of his journey to prominence. He joined the sound system Exodus, where his talent flourished, and began collaborating with producers like Papa P, releasing local hits such as "Maggie’s Letter."
His big break came when Derek Nelson of BBC’s Ebony discovered him and offered him a spot on the show. Around this time, Macka B collaborated with Fashion Records, releasing "Bible Reader," which climbed the reggae charts. He later joined forces with Mad Professor of Ariwa Sounds, producing his debut album Sign of the Times in 1986, which reached #1 on the UK reggae charts and kickstarted extensive European tours.
Macka B’s discography grew rapidly, with albums such as We’ve Had Enough (1987), Buppie Culture (1989), and Natural Suntan (1990). His single "Proud of Mandela," celebrating Nelson Mandela’s release, topped the charts. Throughout the 1990s, he recorded extensively for Ariwa, releasing albums like Roots Ragga, Hold On To Your Culture, and Roots & Culture. Collaborations with artists such as Gregory Isaacs, Steel Pulse, and Tony Rebel further solidified his reputation.
A trailblazer, Macka B was the first British reggae artist to tour Australia and the former Yugoslavia, bringing his message of unity and consciousness to new audiences. His performances have spanned the globe, including Africa, Japan, the US, and Europe, sharing stages with legends like Burning Spear, U-Roy, and Kool and the Gang. He’s performed at major festivals like Reggae Sunsplash and in iconic moments such as singing for Nelson Mandela in Kingston, Jamaica.
The 2000s saw Macka B release albums such as Global Messenger (2000), By Royale Command (2002), and Word, Sound, and Power (2004). His 2015 album Never Played A 45 became a fan favorite, with the title track achieving anthem status. In 2016, he embarked on an Asia tour, spreading reggae’s message to countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan.
Macka B’s impact extends beyond music. A passionate vegan, he educates audiences about healthy living through his viral "Medical Monday" and "Wha Me Eat Wednesday" videos, with highlights like his cucumber freestyle gaining over 23 million views. These videos combine humor and facts, making nutrition accessible and entertaining.
After over 30 years, Macka B continues to tour and record, spreading consciousness, positivity, and reggae’s enduring message of unity and love.
