David Kirton is a vibrant Modern Roots Reggae Singer
and Songwriter from the Caribbean island Barbados.
‘Rhythm Music Magazines’ Patricia Maschino referred to David’s sound as
“an introspective roots-rock-pop hybrid” in her glowing report from
Midem Cannes. The ‘Colorado Springs Independent’ says David Kirton “gave
birth to a fresh up to date roots melody. Its new its different but it
will still make you groove and praise”. ‘Air Jamaica’s’ Sky Writings
review stated “Kirton’s job is to make you dance and think and he is
very good at it.”
In the past five years David Kirton has managed to make a firm footprint
on the world music market. Consistent touring from 1999, first with ‘The
Spirit of Unity Tour’ featuring Reggae giants Maxi Priest, Third World,
Culture and Steel Pulse. Then opening for ‘Culture’ on a three month USA
Tour. David has held slots on numerous festivals such as Reggae on the
River, New Orleans Reggae Riddims and Los Angeles, African Market Place.
Determined to have his sound be heard by the widest group possible David
has toured with his Modern Roots Band as far North as Missoula, Montana
and to Caribbean Music starved areas like Laramie, Wyoming and of course
the classic states such as Colorado and California.
Caribbean Today music editor and Miami disc jockey Howard ‘Flagga’
Duperly rated David’s second release ‘Modern Roots’ #17 in his Top 20
albums for 2001. In another issue he went on to say “Kirton has struck
the right chord. He brings to the marketplace a refreshingly unique aura
that’s garnering respect from his peers and admiration from his fans.
His appeal is broad, easily satisfying the mainstream audience, and
especially those who crave something new.”
David’s first album ‘Stranger’ was the beginning of this journey. Howard
Campbell, Jamaica Observer, called Stranger “a winner from start to
finish” David was lucky enough for ‘Stranger’ to reach the hands of the
late Pele Lanier from Reed Midem and in1999 David performed at the 33rd
Annual Midem Cannes Music Market. There he was seen by Gary Himelfarb,
RAS president / CEO . In Gary’s interview with Billboard entitled
Barbadian Singer Soars, by Elena Oumano, he said “I signed David Kirton
because I felt his music was sincere and the message was real and
because a number of people in the Reggae business told me how impressed
they were with his CD. He is charismatic musically and in appearance. In
our 20 years we’ve released only two non-Jamaican Artists.”
In December of 2002 David released a collection of original songs titled
‘Island Songs for Children’. Songs like ‘Donkey Cart rider’ ‘Sno Cone
Man,’ ‘Fish can Fly’ and ‘Cow and Egret’ teach traditions, Caribbean
culture and give humorous views and life style insight about people from
the Islands. The music and lyrics are arranged so as that not only will
children enjoy the songs but parents will find them selves singing
along. Recently David has been enjoying performing at Barbadian schools
and Childrens events. He has developed a lively stage show using
backdrops and two other musicians to create a memorable event geared
especially towards children ages 2 – 10 years.
