Toby Foyeh and Orchestra Africa’s music is a melting
pot created out of a unique fusion of traditional Nigerian Yoruba music
including Highlife, Afrobeat, folklore with jazz, rock, pop, and latin
music. Though absorbing various western elements the music is fresh and
original.
Toby started playing and performing music from an early age in Nigeria
paying his dues through school bands in Ibadan and Lagos, as well as
while studying in the United States. A band he formed with some high
school friends went on to tour America as Hugh Masekela’s Ojah band.
Toby composes, arranges, produces the band’s music, and sings with the
backing female singer- dancers. The band features traditional African
instruments such as Gangan (Talking Drum), Kalimba (Thumb Piano),
Assorted Percussion, Flutes, Guitars, Keyboards Synthesizers, male lead
and female lead and chorus vocals. The band’s percussion breaks
sometimes feel like a Drum? The main featured instruments - Guitar and
Flute played by multi-instrumentalist Toby Foyeh serve as highlights for
individual songs. The lead Guitar is treated with the calculated
virtuosity, speed and technique of a skilled jazz guitarist interpreting
the traditional and contemporary music of Africa. The female
singer-dancers in African costumes add a spice of tradition Africa in
their call and response style of chorus singing with improvised African
dancers.
Their music expresses social situations in Africa, the people, their
joys and pains spirits, mountain, rivers, forests, animals etc. Though
they see themselves as guardians of African tradition and culture, they
are also explorers creating new musical horizons. Their music also
expresses the present day Africa as it finds itself in a global world of
high technology and mass media and communications. The music attempts to
be true to its African roots while being aware of today’s musical
environment. Toby Foyeh is an established artist in Nigeria. His
previous album there had 2 hit singles “Ore mi and I’m on Fire”
Toby while living in London has made a significant impact on the UK
world pop scene with appearances on prestigious events. Since recently
migrating to the US he has begun to do the same here. His recent
appearances at festivals, clubs and colleges are just the beginning. |
