Alika has become one of the major Dancehall Reggae
Roots exponents of the Spanish-speaking world garnering millions of hits
on Youtube...
Born in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay in the late 70's, in a working
class home to a mother of Paraguay Guarani roots and Uraguayan father
they lived in Montevideo at which time the family moved to Argentina
where she began her studies and took an interest in cultural history.
Influenced greatly by the hip hop she heard when small and which gave
her her first exposure to music.
In 1994 she founded Actitud Maria Marta, one of the first rap bands in
Argentina. They performed many shows and were recognized by the press as
a trend setter. After release of the single "Cornering the Beast" (1996
Polygram) The group disbanded.
Alika decided in 1999 to start her own new project based on the roots of
Rastafari culture, especially for its clear and straightforward lyrics
that speak of respect, dignity, oppression of the Western system,
confidence in oneself, and the problems that are experienced in the
neighborhoods of the poor.
She was a featured MC on sound systems scene of Chile, where she
released NO DEJES QUE TE PAREN (Don't let them stop you) in 2001 on
Mabrak Records her first independent feature which with few economic
resources had been released on cassette and had come to significantly
influence the young people who listened and she also began to perform
their new work live.
In 2003 she released her second album independently. The disk was well
received in South America with tracks like Paciencia, Demanda y
Encendedores (Patience, Demand and Lighters.)
In 2005 her third production RAZON MEDITACION ACCION.was released. An
album whose music sounds more roots than ever and contains tracks such
as Costumbre de Matarand No le des fuerza a Babilonia.
Her charisma and stage presence have led her to share sound systems and
music festivals in different districts and cities in countries like USA,
Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and
Argentina.
In early 2006, released in Germany El Rugido del leon (The roar of a
lion) vinyl edition included tracks from her two latest productions.
